Mixing Decor Style
I use to think a house needed to be mid-century to have mid-century furniture. In Toronto my home is traditional so I went with traditional furniture. As time went one I realized it is way more interesting to add different eras or styles to a room. Here is how I did that with my dinning room in Calgary.
Table and chairs: The table is mid-century with clean and simple lines. I got the table by searching on Kijiji I added new chairs at a great price from structube. The lines of the chairs add much needed interest. And an added bonus these chairs are not only reasonably priced they are stackable, so get a few extra for those larger dinner parties.
The rug: Is very traditional. This used to be in my living room in Toronto. I got it from a rug shop that I love! It's called Lashar Rugs you can shop online but going into the the store is a great experience the owner is beyond helpful and kind. The rug softens up the room, otherwise it would seem cold. The colours work, as it ties in the flooring to the table. To recap, we have a mid-century table, new modern chairs, and a traditional rug.
Lighting: This light is my favourite! It is from West Elm and comes in white, black or gold! Go and order it now as there is generally a wait time for this beauty. I went with black as it ties into the chairs and adds some weight to the room. The style goes well with the table and is a juxtaposition with the rug. In lighting, I also included the mirror as it reflects the light. The mirror is rustic, adding in a little Alberta flare. Sometimes if you are stuck on what to do, use your surroundings for inspiration.
Art: In this case I went for wall hangings. It adds some texture and some bohemian feel to ensure the dining room doesn’t feel too stuffy or fancy. I got these wallhangings from Home Sense and simply flipped one to add a different feel. These hangings wouldn’t be my top pick but on a maternity leave budget they will have to do. Ideally I would like to support local handmade products. Once I’m back to work I will order my custom hangings from my talented sister Megan. I would also count greenery as art. I really enjoy the idea of adding greenery to every room, it adds some dimension.
Flowers: Fresh flowers never hurt, especially when they are peonies! But peonies have more of a traditional feel to them in comparison to tropical plants.
I hope this room gave you some inspiration to experiment. In a traditional home you can have boho, mid-century, modern and rustic or whatever you please. The biggest take away is to make sure that colour tones work and that you love every piece and it will come together.
Happy Decorating!
